Lush Gorgeous Moisturiser review
Before I went off on my travels to India my lovely friends gave me a Lush “Hello Gorgeous” gift set. Included in the pretty box was a sample tin of Gorgeous a moisturiser that I’ve been eyeing for a while but wasn’t sure I could justify spending £35 on a moisturiser. Well after using the little tin for two weeks I fell in love with the cream and decided to buy the full 45g tub (for reviewing purposes of course).
The Cream
Gorgeous comes in the recycled plastic black tubs that Lush use with the screw on lid. On the front is a label with the Lush logo and ingredients. On opening the lid the scent of neroli hits you, luckily I quite like this smell. The texture of the cream is slightly runnier than Smitten but thick enough for a small amount to moisturise your whole face.
There is quite a lot of hype around this product, basically Lush met Princess Diana and bought the recipe for her own personal moisturiser, tweaking it to eliminate the petrolatum. I have no idea how beautiful Princess Diana’s skin was but she always looked good to me. So anyway back to the moisturiser…
Containing cold-pressed oils (the best way to extract the nutrients) Lush have clearly not scrimped on putting the best ingredients into this cream. Neroli is a very expensive oil because it is very labour intensive to create oil out of the little white flowers. The cream is classed as vegetarian not vegan as it contains honey water. I don’t consume milk or dairy but have no ethical issue with honey so luckily I can use this product. The cream contains extra virgin olive oil, cold pressed organic Evening Primrose oil, cold pressed organic avocado oil, orange flower absolute and more. Not only top quality oils but also organic or extra virgin, the price of the cream goes on the quality ingredients not advertising or packaging.
Evening Primrose oil is believed to be very nourishing the skin and has anti inflammatory properties keeping skin healthy and moisturised. You only need to read about my amazing avocado hair mask to know that I am a big fan of avocado. Avocado oil is excellent for moisturising and protecting the skin from the elements. Fans of sticking with natural ingredients will be concerned to note that the cream contains parabans (preservatives), to stop the cream from going off. Personally I have not read of any research that will make me not use this product which contains minute quantities.
Product in Action
A ten pence sized amount of cream is more than enough for my face and I rub it into my skin using my fingers using circular motions. Marketed by Lush as a day cream, Gorgeous is indeed a nice and light cream which is quickly absorbed and makes skin feel wonderful, almost like silk. My skin feels soft long after using the cream and it doesn’t irritate my skin. In fact it works so well that it is a huge effort not to keep touching my face after application.
Two weeks after using the cream consistently my naturally normal/ dry skin is softer, smoother and I love that it gives me such a good base for makeup.
Packaging suitability
Gorgeous comes in a tub which means I have to dip my fingers into the cream so I was meticulous with making sure I washed my hands before using it. Despite being very careful after four weeks or so of use the cream started to smell off and the oils started to separate. I was very surprised as this has never happened with any other Lush products. A quick email to customer services and I sent off the cream for further investigation. Within a week I was sent a new tub of cream with a few freebies to make up for the postage paid and general inconvenience. It appears the first tub was a one off as my second tub has been fine, and three months on is still the same as new.
I do wonder if the packaging is suitable for a moisturiser, I would prefer it if it came in the hand pumps like Enchanted Eye Cream.
Value for Money
Gorgeous costs £35 for a 45g tub which at first sight does sound like an exorbitant price. I’ve had my tub of Gorgeous for three months and there’s more than half left so if it lasts for a total of 6 months it works out at less than £1.50 a week. Now this is not really that expensive. As Lush point out if you compare Gorgeous to other brands with similar quality ingredients then Lush win hands down in relation to price. The question is how does Gorgeous fare compared to Lush’s own moisturisers?
When I look for a day cream I usually want some sort of sun protection, and unfortunately this is where Lush falls down. I understand why as Lush try to stay with natural ingredients and sun protection usually involves using manmade ones. After trying Lush’s Paradise Regained which does contain SPF I feel like Gorgeous may end up relegated to a night cream. Which is a shame but sun protection is an essential part of skincare.
Overall I would recommend trying this product if you have problem skin as it does make me feel heavenly. If Gorgeous came with SPF I would not hesitate to stick with it as a daytime moisturiser.
